Air India’s new broom to sweep out dead wood

Monday, 01 Sep, 2011 0

The Indian government has launched an all-out effort to turn around the financially crippled Air India.

It includes an infusion of equity to help pay down loans, and special accounts to be used for paying money owed to oil companies and airport operators.

A team led by aviation secretary Nasim Zaidi and new Air India chief Rohit Nandan will also target retired Air India-Indian Express employees who have returned to the airline’s payroll as advisors.

“A list of retired AI-IA employees who were re-employed as consultants at fancy salaries by previous managements is being drawn up,” said Zaidi.

“A number of them have been kept just because they were useful in doing dubious things when in service and re-employing is the best way to keep them silent.

“Such people will have to go as the new administration has no such compulsions,” the aviation secretary warned.
