APEC forum to look at crisis co-operation
SYDNEY: This week’s earthquake in the Solomon Islands and the subsequent panic in Cairns when residents were warned that a tsunami could be on the way – a threat fortunately not realised – adds new relevance to the APEC tourism forum on Queensland’s Gold Coast next month.
The forum on May 15 will feature a number of keynote speakers who will focus on the value of collaboration between governments, industry, international organisations and the community during times of crisis.
Speakers will include Geoffrey Lipman, assistant secretary-general of the UN World Tourism Organisation; Sandy Hollway, a member of the Cyclone Larry Taskforce and CEO of the Sydney Olympics; Dr Sasithara Pichaichannarong of the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sport, and Dr Lily Chiu of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority;
Ian Kean, executive director, APEC International Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Trevor Clement, Emergency Management Australia, will join them.
Case studies on natural disasters like Cyclone Larry and the Boxing Day tsunami, and pandemic events such as SARS, will highlight the complexities faced by governments, communities and organisations when coping with such events.
Panel discussions will seek participants’ insight into the needs and roles of stakeholders in crisis response.
Interested tourism industry representatives are invited to participate in the one-day “Importance of Collaboration in Times of Crisis” forum.
Registration is free and includes lunch and a post-forum networking function.
