Attack on US Consulate in Libya planned by al Qaeda, say insiders

CNN has reported that the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi which left the American Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans slain is suspected by U.S. officials to have been planned in advance by al Qaeda-related jihadists.  These sources told the news source that the "protests" about a film on the Prophet Muhammad are a diversion from what was a calculated attack.

U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens was killed on September 11,  when a mob stormed the U.S. Consulate and set it on fire.

Sources have told CNN that a rocket launched grenade caused the fire.  They also said that U.S. forces were sending out drones to scope out jihadist training camps to find the source of the planned attack.

In a separate opinion piece for CNN, Norman Benotman of London’s counter-extremist Quilliam Foundation said that the attack was the work of 20 militants prepared for a military assault.

President Obama released a statement today that said:

"We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act," said President Barack Obama. "And make no mistake, justice will be done."
