Cross-channel price-fixing investigation
Two companies raided by concerned EC officials
The ferry operator P&O and Eurotunnel are both being investigated over price-fixing, following a surprise raid by European Commission officials on the premises of both companies.
The Financial Times reports that the investigations were launched yesterday against a number of freight and ferry companies across Europe. The EC is reportedly concerned about price fixing on a number of routes.
The Commission told the newspaper that the raids were to uncover “illegal practices concerning fixing of prices and trade conditions for cross-Channel transport services and suspected market-sharing agreements in relation to the provision of ferry services to and from the UK”.
Eurotunnel told the Financial Times that it was operating in a “fiercely competitive market-place” and was “confident any investigation would demonstrate that”. P&O told the FT it was “co-operating fully with the commission”.
