Delta plane emergency landing after taking battering in hail storm

A Delta Air Lines flight from Miami was diverted to New York JFK Airport after its nose cone was nearly demolished by a hailstorm.

The jetliner left Palm Beach International and was bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

That it was diverted to nearby JFK likely means the incident was serious enough to warrant an immediate landing.

Images show the nose caved in which was initially thought to be caused by a bird strike.

Pilots said the impact of the hail caused a problem with navigation equipment.

"Delta flight 1076 diverted to New York-JFK out of an abundance of caution following a mechanical issue. The flight landed safely and without incident and maintenance is evaluating the aircraft," Delta said.

There were 43 passengers aboard the jet.

The US National Weather Service reported severe thunderstorms in northern New Jersey and New York at the time.
