In less than 72 hours of opening bookings for its new Kuala Lumpur-Paris route, budget carrier AirAsia sold 30,000 discounted seats.

The low cost carrier will fly the route four times weekly from February 14.

Fares from Kuala Lumpur to Paris start from $219 until sold out for travel between 14 February and 10 November 2011.

In Australia, AirAsia flies direct to Kuala Lumpur from the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Perth.

“Never before has there been a low cost option between Australia and France, so we expect the number of Australians visiting France to rise along with the number of French visitors to our shores,” said AirAsia X head of commercial, Darren Wright said.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy welcomed the new air link.

“In our business, aviation access is key and new capacity out of a growing market such as France will be welcomed by the Australian tourism industry with open arms,” he said.

Australia received around 90,000 French visitors in 2009.

AirAsia group is continuing to gain momentum with record third quarter 2010 results. Passenger volumes were up nine percent year-on-year with load factor hitting 78 percent.

Profit after tax of RM 327 million, on increased revenues of TM 988 million, was a record for the quarter.
