Explosions on southern Thailand beach spark heightened security for New Year
Thailand’s restive southern region is again under tight security after two bombs exploded overnight on a beach.
Samila beach and the surrounding area in Songkhla province were closed off, and another three bombs were found.
No casualties were reported but caused some damage to two sculptures.
Songkhla governor Weeranant Pengjan said the bombs were planted to target the tourism industry and to shake public confidence.
Security in the province is being stepped up especially in Hat Yai district, for New Year celebrations.
