Gulf Coast casinos have better odds on shore

Friday, 21 Nov, 2005 0

Officials of President Casino, the Gulf Coast gambling barge that washed ashore after Hurricane Katrina, started work on a new shore-based operation even before the state legislature ruled the casinos could come ashore.

Other gaming companies credit the new onshore gambling law as giving the casinos a better chance at coming back after the storm. Casinos that previously had to be on the water can now be built a short distance inland.

“I, for one, was getting really tired of chasing my boat down after every storm, dragging it back to its moorings and gluing it back together,” said Bernie Burkholder, CEO of Treasure Bay Casino, during a meeting to outline plans for rebuilding.

Treasure Bay is planning to build a new casino at its present site to be completed in six months.

The Beau Rivage is also rebuilding in the same location with a planned opening date of next August.

Hurricane Katrina damaged or destroyed most of the dozen coast casinos and damaged a 13th about to open.
