A backpacker who was lost for three weeks in the Australian outback ate flies to survive.

German tourist Daniel Dudzisz was found near Cooper Creek, Windorah, southwest of the remote town of Longreach, Queensland, after going missing for almost three weeks.

The 26-year-old was on a walking holiday when he became trapped between two areas of floodwater.

After his supplies of baked beans and cereal ran out, he ate flies, which he said contain lots of protein, according to reports.

Inspector Mark Henderson told ABC Radio: "He certainly was hungry, but other than that he was in reasonable spirits."

Undeterred by his ordeal, the hiker is preparing to resume his walking tour, but has agreed to stick to the main roads to avoid getting lost again.
