Milan crash pilot ‘may have committed suicide’
The pilot of the light aircraft which crashed into the Pirelli building in Milan yesterday evening may have committed suicide, according to some reports.
According to the man’s son, who is himself a pilot with Swiss Air, his 68 year old father had been having financial problems.
Aviation security fears may increase if it is proved that his father had indeed deliberately flown into the 30 storey building which is one of the few tall landmarks in the area. It could provoke fears of further similar attacks, following the events of September 11.
However the Italian authorities continue to believe an accident was the most likely reason for the crash – which killed three people including the pilot himself.
The plane, a single-engine Rockwell Commander 112, took off from Locarno at 1715 (1515GMT) on Thursday. As the pilot approached Milan he told air traffic control that he was having problems with the landing gear.
