MSC Cruises hooks up to shore power in NYC for first time
MSC Cruises has switched on shore power in New York for the first time.
It came as MSC Meraviglia hooked up to shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, allowing the ship to turn off engines in port.
MSC Cruises has being fitting shore power capability as standard on all new ships since 2017, while retrofitting older ships in the fleet.
Bu the end of this year, 17 of the line’s 23 ships will be equipped with shore power capability.
MSC Cruises’ first use of shore power in the United States happened earlier this year when MSC World America connected while docked at the new MSC Cruises terminal terminal at PortMiami.
Andrew Kimball, CEO, New York City Economic Development Corporation, said, “We are ensuring the future of the cruise industry in New York City is sustainable, efficient, and economically competitive.”
“MSC Cruises’ shore power connection and Cunard and Princess cruise ships in recent months – delivers on years of community feedback.”
