New tour a real disaster
New Orleans may have been devastated but it now has a new tourist attraction that could be termed a disaster.
Gray Line New Orleans says its “Hurricane Katrina Tour — America’s Worst Catastrophe” will start 4 January.
Normal Gray Line tours go through the city’s historic district, swamps and cemeteries.
“People around the country don’t understand it until they see it firsthand. We’re going to walk them through what we as locals experienced,” Gregory Hoffman, general manager of Gray Lines New Orleans, told Reuters.
Not everyone is happy about it.
“There should be tours, but they should be linked with people who are displaced and coming up with a plan of action,” said Corlita Mahr, a hurricane victim now working with relief efforts.
The Gray Line tour will include a history of the Mississippi River and the levees built to protect residents as well as the Superdome stadium where victims waited for days to be rescued with little food or water.
One difference between this tour and others: passengers will not be let off the bus to take photos of devastated neighborhoods.
