Numbers travelling abroad falls
The number of foreign trips by UK travellers and the amount they spent abroad fell in the three months to June.
There were 16.4 million overseas visits in the April to June quarter, a 3% fall over the previous three months, while spending was down by 5% to £7.8 billion.
At the same time, visits to the UK were up by 1% to 7.7 million but spending declined by 4% to £3.5 billion.
The Office for National Statistics said that visits abroad in the year ending June rose by 5% to 65.4 million. Numbers travelling to western Europe rose just 1% to 49.6 million, to North America by 15% to 5 million and to other parts of the world by 22% to 10.7 million.
Inbound figures for the 12 months show a 12% rise in oversaes visitors to the UK to 29.3 million. A 1% decline in numbers from North America to 4.2 million was offset by an 11% rise to 18.9 million from western Europe and a 25% rise from the rest of the world to 6.1 million.
