Official sacked after fatal tourist boat accident
Officials in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang have sacked two port officials for failures resulting in last week’s sinking of a tourist boat that killed three people.
Cruise boat Thao Van 2, which was carrying 46 people, sank in the Han River shortly after departing Da Nang claiming the lives of a man and two young children.
Lieutenant Colonel Dang Huu Tai, captain of the waterway traffic police, said the ship was overloaded and was previously denied a license due to not meeting safety standards.
Le Sau, director of Da Nang Port, and Nguyen Cong Hieu, captain of the local port management team, were dismissed for failures in oversight.
Huynh Duc Tho, chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee announced the dismissals after questioning the port officials at an urgent meeting following the sinking.
Colonel Nguyen Van Chinh, deputy police director said legal proceedings would begin against the ship owner and captain.
