Qantas on time and on notice
Qantas passengers arrived at their destinations on time more often than passengers for any other domestic airline over the past 12 months.
But keeping that record intact over the next few months may be challenging as the airline’s engineers are threatening a programme of rolling stoppages until mid-December.
The engineers have warned that one-hour strikes will start next Thursday targeting Qantas facilities in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide on different days.
The engineers say they are taking the action in support of calls for job security at a time when Qantas has announced a new operational strategy focused on Asia.
The latest strike threat has taken some of the gloss off an official report that shows Qantas achieved the highest level of domestic on time departures for 2010-11 at 83.8 per cent, followed by Virgin Australia at 79.9 per cent, Jetstar at 77.1 per cent and Tiger Airways at 65.9 per cent.
Qantas had the best on-time performance of domestic airlines for 10 out of the 12 months during this period.
