Ryanair takeover of Buzz is delayed
Ireland: But carrier guarantees French route network for the long term
Ryanair has announced that its much-publicised takeover of Buzz will not be completed on schedule because it is still waiting for the final go-ahead from the Office of Fair Trading.
As reported, the Irish carrier wanted to complete the takeover of its Dutch rival by today, and while both carriers say they are anxious to complete the deal, its completion is being held up while legal papers are made ready. A spokesman for Ryanair said in a statement: “Ryanair and KLM have received enormous assistance from the OFT to date and neither party envisages any difficulties in obtaining the necessary clearance in due course.”
Meanwhile, the Irish carrier is hailing its own decision to guarantee flights to 18 regional French destinations for the next 15 years after completing a series of deals with airports in France. According to The Daily Telegraph, Ryanair will operate the most extensive Anglo-French network in history from 1 May, flying at least once a day to 18 destinations.
The newspaper says the news will prove especially popular with Britons who own holiday homes in France. The managing director of French Property News, Dick Schrader, welcomed the move, telling The Telegraph: “With the disappearance of Buzz there has been a lot of uncertainty around. But this real commitment from Ryanair is extremely welcome, and enables people to plan, knowing they can reach their property easily.”
