Seminar to crackdown on fraudsters

Business travellers who rip off their bosses with false expense claims are being targeted at next months Business Travel Show in Birmingham.

A seminar, ‘cracking down on expenses’, will examine how companies can weed out the fraudsters who cost businesses up to 5% of their annual budget by fabricating claims.

A recent survey by Travelodge found one company boss claimed £20,000 for re-spraying a private helicopter, another submitted a bill for flowers and dinner with his mistress while several businessmen claimed for business meetings held in lap-dancing clubs.

Business Travel Show event director David Chapple said another recent study, this time by the Institute of Business Ethics, revealed 20% of employees regard fiddling expenses as a perk of the job.

“One in five employees believe it is perfectly acceptable to fiddle expenses and not surprisingly, business has had enough of watching profits being slowly siphoned away,” he said.

But while larger organisations have the resources to stop the swindlers, small companies are struggling, he said.

“That is why we are hosting a training seminar in Birmingham,” said Chapple.

The seminar will be run by ATS Euromaster head of procurement Val Stevens and Concur Technologies European managing director Simon Nelson.

Stevens said: “Fraudulent expense claims are a widespread problem throughout business but the good news is that most scams can be stopped overnight with the introduction of an expense management strategy. This will also help streamline administration and provide companies with invaluable management information.”

The Business Travel Show takes place at the NEC on October 5 and 6.
