Strikes and tighter airport checks set to cause delays

Travellers are being warned of long queues and delays as security staff at Barcelona Airport begin their strike action today.

Around 1,000 passengers have already missed flights due to a ‘go-slow’ at the airport this week, and nearly a third of flights have been delayed.

Stepping up their action, staff will initially stop work for four hours, intermittently, throughout today (Friday), Sunday and Monday, then again at the end of the week.

If the dispute is not resolved, staff are threatening full 24-hour strikes from August 14.

The 360-strong workforce claim they are understaffed and overworked, leading to many having sick leave for psychological problems.

Employer, Eulen, said in a statement that it has tried to negotiate but the strike committee has either failed to attend meetings or has showed no intention of negotiating.

Airlines are advising passengers to arrive early for flights at the airport.

They are also warning travellers of longer queues at European airports in general due to enhanced immigration checks.

Ryanair is advising customers to arrive at least three hours before the scheduled departure time.

EasyJet is telling passengers to allow extra time through the airport to be able to get to the gate on time.
