Thai airlines facing flight ban over safety standards

Saturday, 29 Mar, 2015 0

Thai airlines could be blacklisted from flying overseas after concerns were highlighted over safety standards.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has reportedly highlighted significant problems with the country’s airline safety, according to officials.

The organization has not gone public with its concerns but has informed the Thai government.

ICAO audited Thai aviation standards in January which looked at licensing and training, accident investigation and air worthiness.

Japan has already moved to block upcoming flights operated by Thai airlines, while South Korea and China are also reportedly considering doing the same.

Carriers which will be affected by an international ban include Thai AirAsia X, NokScoot, Asia Atlantic Airline and flag carrier Thai Airways.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said he had ordered the Thai foreign minister to talk with aviation officials in Japan.

Thai Airways president Jarumporn Chotikasathein said the airline will have to cancel five charter flights that were scheduled for the busy holiday period next month.
