Thailand leads push for Southeast Asia Schengen style visa
Thailand is leading an initiative to establish a Schengen style cross border visa for some parts of Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has had discussions with officials from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Thailand aims to be the hub to facilitate travel to its neighbours.
These nations attract about 70 million tourists a year collectively.
It would mean a single visa would enable travel to all six countries much like the Schengen system.
A common ASEAN bloc visa for all 10 Southeast Asian countries has been proposed for years but has never gone beyond initial discussions due to differing immigration policies.
There is support for the move within the Thai tourism industry to attract more long haul travelers for extended stays.
