TravelMole’s Two-Minute Interview: Hawaiian Airlines

Thursday, 08 May, 2009 0

The Mole: We are seeing a lot of new competition across the Pacific. What does Hawaiian offer in terms of product and services that sets it apart from the competition.

Sherilyn Robinson: Our difference is Hawaii. Other carriers fly direct to the US mainland, but we offer the traditional route of both Hawaii and the mainland, so passengers don’t need to choose between them. We also offer 160 flights per day between the Hawaiian Islands, which no other carrier does.

TM: In tough times like these, travellers want even more value for their dollar. How does Hawaiian stack up?

SR: We have very sharp pricing to both Hawaii and the mainland, and have just common rated the islands of Maui, Kauai and The Big Island with Honolulu – that’s a major increase in value. Our fares from Australia include meals, drinks, main screen entertainment and a free individual luggage allowance of two pieces, each weighing up to 32 kilograms. Not every airline to Hawaii can say that.

TM: Hawaiian flies from Sydney to Honolulu three times a week. Are there any plans to add extra services or expand to other Australian ports?

SR: Not at this stage. But we now have comprehensive arrangements in place with domestic airline partners in Australia, enabling us to offer same day connections to our Sydney-Honolulu flights from 20 destinations.

TM: Hawaiian has a good onward network to US mainland cities but why would Australian travellers choose to go one-stop via Hawaii rather than direct?

SR: To experience Hawaii as well as the mainland. For leisure travellers, clearing US Customs in Honolulu is easy – we arrive mid morning, when there are few other flights being processed, and on arrival on the mainland there are no more formalities. We also offer Hawaii as a stopover destination to relax on the way home.
