United adds SAF supply at three airports
United Airlines has expanded its sustainable aviation fuel supply agreement with producer Neste.
The short term expansion will supply SAF at three major US airports in United’s network – Houston George Bush Intercontinental, Newark Liberty and Dulles International in Washington DC.
United Airlines has set a target of 2050 to reduce real emissions without relying on carbon offsets.
United will become the first commercial airline to purchase SAF for use on flights from the three airports
Lauren Riley, United Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “Introducing sustainable aviation fuel for the first time at these hubs is another significant milestone.”
“While United remains the leading SAF user, we recognize that the growth of the SAF market requires support from both state and federal governments.”
Finland-based Neste’s SAF is made from renewable waste and residues such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste.
United signed the first overseas SAF agreement for a US airline with Neste in 2022 to supply fuel for flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
Neste has been supplying SAF to United at Chicago O’Hare since August 2024.
