Yorkshire gears up for Le Grand Depart
With six months to go, the start of the Tour de France Grand Depart in the UK is on time and budget, according to organisers.
The Grand Depart was last held in the UK in 2007 in Kent, where it generated an estimated £90 million for the UK economy.
The Tour in 2014 will cover 349 miles of UK roads and spectator crowds along the route are estimated to be in the millions, making it one of the biggest free sports events to be held in the UK.
Yorkshire will host the first two stages of the Tour de France, with a third stage from Cambridge to London.
The Yorkshire Grand Depart comprises two stages: Leeds to Harrogate (190km, Saturday July 5) and York to Sheffield (200km, Sunday July 6) before the Tour moves south for a third stage from Cambridge to London (170km, Monday July 7).
The Tour de France Grand Depart will form part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, a programme to bring up to 70 world class sporting events to the UK by 2019 to help build on the success of London 2012.
