A ‘laughable’ lack of security
UK: Passenger travelled to Spain and back on teenage son’s passport
Security within the UK’s aviation industry is today under more scrutiny after it was revealed how a 49-year-old flew using his son’s passport – showing him as a teenager.
According to The Sun newspaper, Ian Sharrock passed through some six security checks flying from Manchester to Malaga and back, after he mistakenly grabbed his son’s passport before flying to the Spanish resort for a three-day conference.
Mr Sharrock, who is a travel agent himself, said he showed the passport on boarding his flight, again on arrival in Spain – and then went through the same procedure on the trip home. He told the newspaper: “It is laughable, especially during a war. It was the wrong name and the wrong picture. On the passport I am 46, 5ft 6in, grey and with glasses. Paul is 5ft 10in, with brown hair.”
A spokesman for Aviance, which handles check-ins for Monarch, said procedures have now been tightened after what it described as a “rare oversight”.
