Airlines warn of further storm disruption
Airlines continue to warn of delays and cancellations today as the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia continue to sweep across the UK.
Winds of more than 70mph and heavy rain are hitting parts of Scotland and northern England.
British Airways is giving passengers travelling to or from Dublin, Belfastm, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Isle of Man, Leeds-Bradford, Manchester or Newcastle on Tuesday~the option to move their travel dates.
“We expect at times that the winds may be too strong to safely operate loading and unloading vehicles at some UK airports, so some flights are likely to experience delays,” it warned.
BA has also been forced to cancel a small number of flights at Heathrow due to landing restrictions.
Flybe, which was forced to cancel 170 flights yesterday, said it plans to operate as normal today but is giving passengers due to fly into or out of Belfast City, Scotland, Southampton or the Channel Islands today the change to rebook within the next seven days at no charge, to the same or similar destination, providing there are seats still available.
Aer Lingus said it plans to operate schedules as normal today, but added: “In the event that the knock-on effects of Storm Ophelia causes delays or cancellations we will contact guests via SMS.”
Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said: "The worst of Ophelia has now passed and the winds will continue to ease through the day today as she moves out into the North Sea. Strong, damaging winds were recorded in the warning areas on Monday with gusts of up 90mph recorded.”
