At least five dead as dangerous waves batter Australia beaches
Five people died over the Easter holidays In Australia after mammoth waves struck the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria states.
At least two other people were missing.
On Easter Friday, a fisherman and two other men were found dead in the water in separate incidents in NSW.
A woman also drowned while another is missing near San Remo in Victoria.
Rescue teams were also searching for another man near Sydney,
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan called it an ‘awful start; to the Easter weekend.
“My thoughts are with the family of someone who has lost their life in such tragic circumstances, and potentially there is more difficult news to come,” she said.
Australia’s eastern and southern coast has been battered by large, dangerous waves.
Surf Life Saving Australia, Adam Weir, advised daytrippers and tourist to only visit patrolled beaches.
“These coastal locations can present dangers, some that you can see and some that you can’t, which is why we have some simple advice: Stop, Look, Stay Alive.”
