Bailiffs called in over unpaid term-time holiday fine
The tourism industry has been blamed after bailiffs were called in over an unpaid fine for a term time holiday.
The fine had originally been £120 for the 14 year-old’s unauthorised absence from Sweyne Park School in Rayleigh, Essex after he went on a five-day holiday to Spain with his family.
But his parents were forced to pay £1,230 after court bailiffs threatened to take property from the house to cover the amount owed.
They had previously refused to pay despite losing an appeal.
The grandmother, who paid the fine and asked not to be named, said: "Part of the problem is the tourism industry, which deliberately hikes up prices during the summer holidays.
"It’s quite a sober warning to other parents."
Bailiffs had said that goods would be sold to cover £3,500 for the fine and charges and that the parents would be jailed for three months, reports the Daily Mail.
