Celebrating 100 years of NY state parks in Niagara Falls

Wednesday, 27 Mar, 2024 0

Niagara Falls USA is joining the celebration as New York State commemorates the 100th Anniversary of its state parks.

The centenary will showcase the 10 state parks.

Niagara Falls State Park has been captivating visitors with its falls and scenic landscapes even longer.

Established in 1885, it is the oldest state park in the US.

Just some of its iconic activities include:

Maid of the Mist – The Maid of the Mist is the most iconic way to experience Niagara Falls. During the boat tour, guests will be able to hear the roar of 600,000 gallons of water crashing down around them every second, whilst getting up close to the Falls.

The Cave of the Winds – Walk along the wooden pathways to the ‘Hurricane Deck’ to be within feet of the crashing Bridal Veil Falls

Illumination of the Falls – Niagara Falls’ nightly illumination transforms the Falls into a spectacle for everyone to enjoy, as the free nightly fireworks light up the sky.

In addition to Niagara Falls State Park, the region is home to several other state parks, each offering its own unique charm, outdoor adventures and activities:

Whirlpool State Park has some of the best views in Niagara Falls, with the swirl of the Niagara Whirlpool’s Class 5 whitewater, the emerald green of the Niagara River, and the gorge. Stay on the upper level for picnics or descend the 300 feet into the gorge for a thrilling hike or for fishing.

Enjoy a picnic at Devil’s Hole State Park.  Devil’s Hole offers sweeping views of the river, and a walkway down into the gorge places you up-close-and-personal with the lower reaches of the Whirlpool rapids.

Take your camera to Fort Niagara State Park. Located next to the Old Fort Niagara, the surrounding park offers picture-perfect views of Lake Ontario, hiking trails, playing fields and offers fishing access.

Have a lighthouse selfie at Golden Hill State Park. This park lies on a scenic stretch of Lake Ontario between Olcott and Point Breeze, with its main draw being a restored 75-feet tall lighthouse. Test your fishing skills from the jetty or spend your time biking the 5.5 miles of pathways.

Budding naturalists should visit DeVeaux Woods State Park, home to giant red, white and black oak trees, as well as sugar maples, black walnuts, ash and beech trees, among others.

Pack your binoculars at Joseph Davis State Park.  This riverside park is home to the Joseph Davis Bird Conservation Area (perfect for birding), which plays host to bald eagles, ospreys, northern harriers, Cooper’s hawks, eastern bluebirds and more.

Explore great lakes at Wilson-Tuscarora State Park – Home to 475 acres of woodland, open meadows and protected wetlands along the shores of Lake Ontario and Tuscarora Bay. It’s popular with picnickers, sunset-spotters, boaters and anglers .

If you want to feel like a local visit Reservoir State Park – A favorite with active residents thanks to its sports fields, tennis courts and running trails. This Lewiston spot is also popular with those looking to reel in a big one thanks to the excellent fishing on the reservoir.

If you’re feeling artsy head to Artpark State Park (Earl W. Brydges). Home to a world-class amphitheatre that attracts top performances, this sprawling riverside park in Lewiston is fun to explore even when there’s not a show on. Expect hiking trails, art installations and picturesque views.
