Colorado offers meeting-goers more than skiing

When it comes to meetings, most attendee first thoughts about Colorado are about the outdoors: splendid mountains for skiing and hiking, depending on the season. Rivers for rafting and kayaking. Mountain biking everywhere.

But promoters of Denver and surrounding Colorado cities often point out that the state also offers a variety of cultural and artistic highlights that include:

The Denver Art Museum this year has a new exhibit called “Yves Saint Laurent: the Retrospective,” chronicling 40 years of world fashion. Later this year, it will also display 70 of Vincent Van Gogh’s works.

The Fine Arts Center, a 1936 historic building on the National Register of Historic Places, is often cited as one of the most handsome and significant buildings in the Rocky Mountain region, according to Charlie Snyder, the center’s spokesman.

“Visiting groups are greeted at the front door with a stunning Dale Chihuly glass chandelier in the foyer,” he said. “The FAC combines an artful ambience with wonderful meeting spaces.”

In Aspen, there’s the Wheeler Opera House. It was renovated in 1984.

It can be booked for private concerts and other events. “Award presentations take place throughout the year, and we are the kings of multimedia for them,” said Executive Director Gram Slaton.

In next door Vail, there are free guided tours of the city’s art collection in the winter through April 11 at the Vail Village Visitor Information Center.

“The tour also discusses the unique charm Vail has achieved through site-specific art in our streetscape,” said Molly Eppard, Art in Public Places coordinator for the city.

For those whose tastes run more towards beer, the Twisted Pine Brewing Company in Boulder just outside of Denver accommodates groups of up to 100 for private tours.

“Smaller parties may reserve a few tables in our ale house or out on the spacious patio if the weather is nice, which it normally is in Boulder,” said Justin Tilotta, logistics manager for the brewery.
