Explore Pittsburgh on the silver screen
Pittsburgh has provided a backdrop for many blockbuster movies over the years.
The city played a starring role in coming-of-age drama, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, as well as action thrillers, Jack Reacher and The Dark Knight Rises, all of which celebrate their 10-year anniversaries this year.
Following the recent release of ‘A League of Their Own’ on Amazon Prime – an adaptation of the hit 1992 film – here are popular movies which were filmed in the city where fans can retrace the footsteps of their favourite characters.
A League of Their Own
Released in August, a remake of the 1992 cult-classic film of the same name, A League of Their Own is a story based on the All-American Women’s Professional Baseball League which was made up of 14 women from Western Pennsylvania. Set in Rockford, but filmed in Pittsburgh, lovers of the eight-part series can follow the actors’ steps at the Community College of Allegheny County’s Boyce Park campus, just east of the city. Specifically for the Amazon Prime series, the field went back in time to World War II and it’s now, permanently, going to stay that way.
Anything’s Possible
Billy Porter’s directing debut, Anything’s Possible sees a Black trans girl navigating her way through senior year. A love letter to Pittsburgh, the film is a true celebration of love and diversity. Popular local attractions such as the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, The Andy Warhol Museum, National Aviary, Point State Park and Duquesne Incline are all portrayed through the cinematography.
The Dark Knight Rises
Celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, Batman buffs can visit some of The Dark Knight Rises’ most notable filming locations in Pittsburgh. Spots include the football stadium scene, filmed at Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field), and the scene where Bane exposes the truth about Harvey Dent, filmed outside Carnegie Mellon University which was portrayed as Gotham City Hall.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Set during the 1990s, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is centred around the heart-warming friendship between three teenagers. Classic Pittsburgh locations include the West End Overlook, which oversees the city skyline and Point State Park, the Hollywood Theater, located in a small quaint town outside of Pittsburgh called Dormont, and Peters Township High School, where most of the school scenes were filmed. One of the most memorable scenes is at Fort Pitt Tunnel, where Emma Watson is seen riding in the back of a pick-up truck and entering the city over Fort Pitt Bridge.
Dear Zoe (4 November)
Movie adaptation of a novel written by Pittsburgh native Phillip Beard; Dear Zoe follows a Pittsburgh family struggling to move forward following an ‘unimaginable loss’. The long-awaited film adaptation will premiere on 4 November at the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.
