New Zealand volcano erupts

Thursday, 07 Aug, 2012 0

A volcano eruption on New Zealand’s North Island  has led to road closures and flight cancellations.

Hundreds of travellers were stranded following the eruption of Mt Tongariro, after being dormant for more than a century.

Rocks and ash were thrown up to a kilometre from the mountain, which lies south west of Lake Taupo.

Air New Zealand flights to Gisborne, Rotorua, Taupo and Napier and Palmerston North, were delayed or cancelled following the eruption, affecting flights to and from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

But the airline said services are recommencing. Flights to and from Napier are still affected.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage although authorities are keeping a close watch and have not ruled out further volcanic activity over the next few weeks.

The main state highway has since reopened. No evacuations have been ordered, although some people have opted to leave.
