Police investigation after accident on Disney ride

Friday, 31 Oct, 2013 0

An investigation has been launched after a five-year-old boy was trapped in a ride at Disneyland Paris yesterday.

The boy, from Montpellier, fell under a boat at the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He was rushed to hospital where his condition is said to be critical but improving.

Disney has shut the ride temporarily to work out what happened.

A police inquiry has been opened to establish whether the incident was due to carelessness, negligence from Disney staff or safety failings of the attraction.

The boy was reportedly with his father at the end of the ride when he stood up, lost his balance and fell overboard, getting stuck underneath the boat behind.

His father jumped into the water and managed to free him and emergency services were called.

A Disneyland spokesman told AFP: "The incident took place in late afternoon. Our first aid services quickly intervened to provide him first aid. The attraction is temporarily closed and we stand with the family."

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride opened at Disneyland Paris in 1992 and lasts for around 10 minutes.

The original ride was built in 1967 at Disneyland California.

Last month a 5,000-strong petition was launched against the Paris park, claiming it was ‘falling apart’, with complaints about cancelled shows, broken rides and bad quality food.
