Survey highlights strong demand for Cuba vacations
A new survey has found there is strong demand for Cuba vacations among Americans, with 30% planning or considering travel to Cuba within the next two years.
The poll was conducted by YouGov on behalf of Airbnb which began offering private home rentals in Cuba a month ago.
It says it already has more than 1,500 listings there.
The survey polled about 1,100 people and found among Latino Americans demand for a Cuba vacation rose to 40%.
"This research shows that more and more Americans are starting to factor Cuba into their future travel plans," said Kay Kuehne, Airbnb regional director for Latin America.
Of those people considering a trip, 65% said they would change travel plans to include Cuba if all travel restrictions were lifted.
President Obama relaxed travel restrictions earlier this year, allowing more Americans to travel to the country without the need for special licenses, although general tourism still remains off limits.
Although the travel industry is primed for the day when this changes, there is also a sizable opposition to any such move to normalize relations between the two countries.
This week a House Republican bill sought to block any new flights and cruise ship travel to Cuba citing violations of current US law.
