UK: Airlines gain as markets push ahead for a third successive day
London’s equity markets had their third positive day in succession yesterday as dealers pushed all the main indices forwards.
The FTSE 100 index of leading shares pushed ahead by 1.8 per cent, gaining 67.4 points to end the day at 3916.8. The broader-based FTSE 250 also gained a similar amount and added 48 points to close at 4224.3. Dealers were busier than of late and traded 2.4 million shares by the 6pm count.
Within the travel sector, airlines had a good day. British Airways added 6.75p to close the day at 124p, while EasyJet also had a positive session, adding 5p for a 224.75p. Fellow no-frills carrier Ryanair added 3p to end the day at 456.5p – not far short of its year-high of 520p.
First Choice had a quiet day, adding 0.5p to 89p, and MyTravel edged down 0.25p for a 11.75p finish. The online retailer lastminute.com closed the session at 92.75p, up 0.25p.
