Traveler charged after trying to carry replica bomb on flight
A passenger was detained at Newark Liberty International Airport in another incident of a security advisor thinking that it’s fine to hide a replica explosive device in carry-on bag.
Israeli national Alon Femar was charged with creating a false public alarm and interference with transportation.
Felmnar told investigators he was headed to a police training seminar in Panama City, Florida dealing with X-ray detection of explosive devices.
His replica model was very realistic, the TSA said, and was built to mimic a fully operational bomb.
"Security is no joke. Our TSA officer who was staffing the X-ray monitor identified what appeared to be a fully assembled IED and reported it to her supervisor. Everyone reacted to the event properly," said TSA’s New Jersey federal security director Tom Carter.
Part of Terminal D was closed off before bomb squad officers gave the all-clear.
"Law enforcement was called in and a safety perimeter was established until such time as it was deemed safe to resume normal operations."
"The traveler should have realized that the item he was carrying would look highly suspicious to TSA officers and should not have brought the item to the checkpoint," the TSA added.
