UPDATED: Missing cat is not a tiger, say French officials
The search has resumed this morning for a wild cat believed to be on the loose in a town around five miles or a 15-minute drive from Disneyland Paris.
Police marksmen and a helicopter were scrambled after residents in the town Montevrain, east of the French capital, reported seeing a wild beast in the supermarket car park.
At first, police said it was definitely a young tiger that had been spotted, but have now confirmed that it is another wild cat.
Residents in the area, including the nearby neighbourhoods of Chessy and Chalifert, were told to stay indoors and take the car instead of walking.
The area around the town’s football pitches and tennis courts were cordoned off this morning. The last sighting of the animal was in an area closer to Paris.
It was first spotted yesterday morning by the wife of the man who owns the Intermarche supermarket in Montevrain.
An examination of a footprint suggests the animal is about 18 months old.
Although a circus was recently in the town, all of its animals have been accounted for.
