Valere Tjolle 1945 -2021
Today we have to report the sad news that Valere Tjolle, the former editor of our Vision Sustainable Tourism Newsletter, has passed away at the age of 76.
Valere worked in the travel industry for over half a century and like many saw high and lows but, the past thirty years saw him dedicate his career to the promotion of sustainability in tourism. For many he was a mentor, for even more he was just a friend and an excellent bloke.
I last spoke to him at length about 6 months ago when I interviewed him for our YouTube channel about his book You Lucky People: The Story of Travel – the world’s most delightful and devastating industry. During the interview he explained his passion for Italy, food, sustainability and travel, all of which were evident when you met him.
His brown hat, outrageous socks, delicious cakes and pastries, wit, kindness, politics and humour are all things I personally will associate with him and all the things I will miss. He said six years ago ‘If we dont get sustainability we won’t survive. If we do then we will thrive’. Prophetic words that I am sure will be echoed in Glasgow over the next few weeks.
Our condolences to his family.
